Research and Development Internship

Zurich Instruments is a technology leader in advanced test and measurement instruments and in control electronics for quantum computing. Our products are used in many challenging research fields by scientists all over the world and by leading high-tech companies worldwide. We help advance science and build the next generation of quantum computers.

If you want to learn what’s “under the hood” of our instruments, join our highly skilled Research and Development (R&D) team for a full-time, 6-month internship starting Early Spring 2027. We offer positions for students in Quantum Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science.   Our internships are tailored to your experience and interests within our current projects. You will collaborate with our R&D team to solve real-world problems for our customers.

Potential Project #1: High-Density Signal Interconnects

Research and develop novel signal-line scaling methods for large-scale quantum computers. Model RF cables and advanced connectors, analyse signal integrity up to several GHz. Contribute to mechanical design, prototyping and lab characterisation.

Required Skills: RF/high-speed design, S-parameters, simulation tools, mechanical engineering and hands-on lab work.

Nice-to-Have Skills: 3D EM simulation (HFSS/CST/openEMS), 3D CAD/SolidWorks, PCB design, VNA measurements, Python.

Potential Project #2: High-Speed Optical Links

Characterise and optimise optical links for high-speed data transfer and synchronisation. Analyse phase noise, jitter and drift, build and test high-speed optical links, and compare commercial transceivers.

Required Skills: RF & analogue electronics, phase noise/jitter, lab measurements, Python.

Nice-to-Have Skills: Fibre optics/photonics, optical transceivers, FPGA or PCB design.

We offer a diverse work environment in an international high-tech arena with an open and transparent company culture where personal development forms the basis of our success. We thrive on cooperation and support distributed decision-making that allows everyone to take responsibility and generate substantial impact immediately and on many levels.   Now is a great time to join the team!   We look forward to receiving your resume and motivation letter. To evaluate your application and match you with a suitable hiring team, we kindly ask that you fill out the application questionnaire.   We would like to receive your application by October 27th at the latest.
