Product Designer, Design Systems
About the role
As a Product Designer at Clara, you’ll own Prism, our design system: the foundations, patterns and guidance that let designers, engineers, PMs and AI agents ship consistent, high-quality products.
This is a hands-on builder role that reports to the Head of Design. You don’t need an engineering title, but you prototype in code, open pull requests, wire up agents and run evals without waiting on anyone. Senior engineers own the design system’s architecture; you own what it should be and make it happen.
Responsibilities
- Own Prism’s design on web and mobile: foundations, tokens, components and patterns, working with the engineers who maintain the library.
- Turn Clara’s design principles into guidance on when to use each pattern, for which user and why, for both people and AI agents.
- Define the mobile pattern layer. We build with native components; you decide where we follow the platform and where Clara diverges.
- Scale the agentic layer. Extend the skills, context files and agent workflows we already use so anyone at Clara can go from idea to on-system UI and pull requests.
- Set the bar and test against it: evals and automated checks for components and AI-generated output, covering accessibility, visual regression and token compliance.
- Use models to benchmark Prism against the best systems and close the gaps.
- Run the system like a product. Own contribution, versioning and releases with engineering, and decide what becomes a system pattern, what stays local and what gets deprecated.
- Measure adoption and speed, and remove what slows product teams down.
Who you are
- 5+ years in product design, including building a design system and driving its adoption. You can show both the architecture and the results.
- Senior judgment on system decisions: you have made calls that affected many teams, and can explain the trade-offs.
- Strong design craft. You can tell when something on-system is still not good.
- You build with AI every day. With tools like Claude Code or Codex, you make changes in a component codebase and open pull requests an engineer would take seriously.
