About Redwood Materials
Redwood Materials was founded in 2017 by JB Straubel, co-founder and former CTO of Tesla, on a simple but radical idea: the critical minerals powering the energy transition already exist. They just need to come back. Today Redwood is the largest lithium-ion battery recycler in North America — recovering, refining, and redeploying critical minerals from end-of-life batteries back into the supply chain. On the energy side, Redwood has deployed the largest second-life battery project in the world, delivering power to AI data centers in months rather than years using proprietary energy architecture engineered entirely in-house. The company is profitable, the market it operates in is projected to grow 20 to 50 times over the next decade, and Redwood is the only company with the supply chain, the technology, and the operational scale to lead it.
The chemical engineering team has three main functions that leverage all the fields of chemical and metallurgical processing: Provide sound technical support and continuously improve our commercial operations; Develop new processes and plants to address the immediate challenges of the recycling industry; Research and development to address the future challenges of recycling industry. This Chemical Engineer will fall underneath Redwood's Operations group supporting our battery recycling and related operations.
Responsibilities will include:
-
Working closely with operations and maintenance teams to ensure that our processes are safe, efficient, sustainable, and continuously improving
-
Leading and participating in cross-functional teams to develop and implement new process plant and equipment
-
Testwork and pilot plant design and operation
-
Flowsheet conceptualization and development
-
Flowsheet trade-off evaluations and studies
-
Process plant design
-
Process plant implementation and installation assistance
-
Process plant commissioning and ramp-up
Desired Qualifications
-
Bachelors or Masters in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or related discipline
-
3 to 5 years experience in Chemical Plant Operations and/or Design and Commissioning
-
Large scale industrial processing experience
-
Operational support and track record of solving difficult chemical and metallurgical process problems and making plant improvements
