Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.
Role Purpose
Corning's Optical Communications (COC) segment is one of the world's leading providers of fiber and optical solutions — and our Cable Technology organization is growing. We're looking for a technically credible engineer to build a training capability from the ground up: designing the onboarding programs, skill-up curricula, and knowledge-transfer systems that will define how our engineering teams develop for years to come. This is a high-visibility, build-from-scratch opportunity with a clear path into a Senior Development Engineer role once the training function is established and running sustainably.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deploy a structured onboarding program and skill-up curriculum for Cable Technology engineering staff across Hickory-area manufacturing sites
- Partner with subject matter experts (SMEs) to capture and codify plant process, equipment, and manufacturing knowledge into structured, teachable content
- Establish a competency and skills assessment process to identify and prioritize training needs across the engineering organization
- Deliver hands-on training using real manufacturing processes, equipment, tools, and plant software; travel between NC Cable Manufacturing sites as needed to gather site-specific process knowledge and deliver in-person instruction
- Track program effectiveness, refine content based on feedback, report outcomes to leadership, and evaluate build-vs-buy decisions for training content; manage external training vendor relationships where applicable
Experiences/Education - Required
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or related technical field)
- 5+ years of professional experience in cable manufacturing with deep, hands-on knowledge of plant systems, equipment, and manufacturing software
- Demonstrated ability to build structured training or technical content from the ground up, without an existing department or template to draw from
- Proficiency in DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control) and structured problem-solving methodologies
- Strong technical writing and content development skills
- Working knowledge of statistical and data systems used to analyze manufacturing performance and identify skill or knowledge gaps
- Familiarity with risk management principles as applied to manufacturing and process environments
Experiences/Education - Desired
- Prior experience in training design, curriculum development, or technical coaching
- Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS) or instructional design frameworks
- Experience managing external vendor or training-partner relationships
- Exposure to structured innovation methodologies
- Cross-functional experience across multiple Cable Manufacturing areas (process, equipment, quality)
