The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.
The Graphics department at The New York Times is looking for a versatile, experienced visual journalist to report, design and create graphics and multimedia stories, with a primary focus on breaking news and fast-turn news response.
You will execute visual coverage on major breaking stories, producing maps, charts, diagrams and interactive graphics on deadline. Your work may also include statistical visualizations, video, photography and animation. You will identify visual story angles, analyze data, and collaborate closely with Graphics colleagues and newsroom journalists across desks. This role combines quick-turn breaking news execution with high-impact journalism. You may also be required to work weekends.
The Graphics department is a diverse group of journalists and visual thinkers with creative backgrounds ranging from architecture to cartography to computer science. We are curious about all kinds of things and seek to find individuals who bring their own curiosity to bear in creative approaches to storytelling.
This is an in-office position based in New York City, and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week.
Applications should include links to a portfolio or work samples to demonstrate the creation of visual journalism. Please feel free to describe your role in specific projects in your cover letter.
Responsibilities:
- Conceive, report, design, and publish breaking news graphics and multimedia stories using a variety of visual forms.
- Design and build interactive and static visualizations.
- Collaborate with Graphics staff and journalists from other newsroom desks on major breaking news events.
- Conceptualize new lines of reporting and analyze data to discover visual stories with accuracy, clarity, and impact.
- Share responsibility for regular weekend news graphics coverage, ensuring prompt, high-quality visual response to breaking news.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
