Executive Vice President of Operations

Executive Vice President, Operations

Reports to: President, Helios HVACR Services

About Helios HVACR Services

Helios HVACR Services is a national commercial HVACR services platform serving multi-site and national account customers across the United States.

The Helios operating model is different from that of a traditional branch-based mechanical contractor. Our customers rely on us to deliver consistent service across a national footprint through local field teams. Our technicians work across a broad range of equipment and environments while navigating different customer requirements, service-level agreements, not-to-exceed limits, IVR systems, documentation requirements, and operating protocols.

Executing that model consistently at scale requires a different kind of operating discipline.

Helios has undergone significant transformation and has built a strong foundation for its next phase. The opportunity now is to scale what is working, increase productive field capacity, strengthen execution across the national platform, and continue growing while maintaining strong margin discipline and an exceptional customer experience.

Helios operates as part of Orion Group, a national network of commercial and industrial service businesses focused on operational excellence, leadership development, and disciplined growth.

Orion Vision: To be a forever company that creates opportunity for exceptional people in the commercial and industrial trades.

Orion Values: Own It. Act with Care. Be Agile. Win Together.

Position Overview

The Executive Vice President, Operations will partner directly with the President of Helios and serve as the senior operating leader responsible for translating customer demand into productive capacity, consistent execution, profitable growth, and stronger leaders throughout the organization.

This is a full-time, onsite leadership role based at Helios' headquarters in Maitland, Florida, with regular travel across the national operating footprint. This is not a corporate oversight role, nor is Helios looking for someone to simply manage a collection of local HVAC branches.

Helios is one national operating platform executed through local field teams, and the EVP must understand how to make that model work at scale.

Location

Maitland, Florida

This is a full-time, onsite role based at Helios' headquarters.

Regular travel across Helios' national footprint, customer locations, and field operations is expected.

Relocation to the Orlando/Maitland area is required for candidates who do not currently live within commuting distance.

The successful candidate will understand the complexity of delivering field service for national and multi-site customers. They will know how technician capacity, skill mix, utilization, routing, dispatch, windshield time, customer requirements, callbacks, material spend, subcontractor usage, project execution, billing cycles, and leadership effectiveness ultimately translate into customer performance and financial results.

This person must also be highly analytical. Helios operates through real-time data and expects leaders to understand what is happening in the business without waiting for month-end reporting. The EVP should naturally drill from company to region, market, manager, technician, customer, and work order until they understand what is driving performance and what needs to change.

Just as importantly, this leader must build capability rather than create another organizational layer. Success will be measured by whether Helios' Commanders, Service Managers, Field Supervisors, and other operating leaders become stronger, more accountable, and more capable of making decisions closer to the customer and the technician.

The EVP will inherit a business with meaningful customer demand, an established national footprint, and a strong foundation from which to grow. The mandate is to increase productive capacity, improve execution, develop leaders, and build the operating capabilities required to scale Helios through continued organic growth and acquisition.

Key Responsibilities

National Service Execution

Lead operational execution across Helios as one national service platform, ensuring consistency while maintaining strong local field leadership and responsiveness.

Deliver against the service expectations of sophisticated national and multi-site customers, including SLAs, response times, NTE requirements, documentation, IVRs, work-order requirements, and customer-specific processes.

Build operating mechanisms that create consistent customer experiences across geographies without creating unnecessary bureaucracy.

Partner closely with national account and sales leadership to understand customer demand, service requirements, growth opportunities, and operational constraints.

Develop a deep understanding of customer-level performance and ensure that growth is both operationally executable and economically attractive.

Strengthen customer relationships through consistent execution, responsiveness, transparency, and accountability.

Capacity Management & Field Productivity

Build a disciplined approach to understanding and managing field capacity across the national footprint.

Translate customer demand into the technician headcount, skill mix, geography, leadership, and infrastructure required to capture it.

Quickly diagnose whether capacity constraints are driven by headcount, technical capability, utilization, routing, dispatch, training, leadership, or other operational factors.

Improve technician utilization and productivity while reducing unnecessary windshield time, callbacks, and other sources of lost capacity.

Partner with recruiting, training, and field leadership to ensure Helios has the right technicians with the right capabilities in the right markets.

Create visibility into current and future capacity so the organization can proactively deploy resources and support growth.

Business & Financial Leadership

Own operational and financial performance and understand the field-level drivers behind revenue, gross margin, operating profit, and cash flow.

Connect technician utilization, labor efficiency, windshield time, callbacks, material spend, subcontractor usage, fleet costs, pricing models, and project execution directly to P&L performance.

Understand the economics and operational implications of flat-rate, time-and-material, maintenance, and project work.

Strengthen project execution, WIP management, billing velocity, and cash conversion.

Ensure growth initiatives are aligned with available capacity, customer profitability, and the ability to execute consistently.

Develop leaders who understand not just their financial results, but the operational actions required to improve them.

Data-Driven Operating Rhythm

Lead Helios through a rigorous, data-driven operating cadence using Domo and other operating systems.

Establish clear KPIs and expectations across company, region, market, leader, technician, customer, and work-order levels.

Identify performance anomalies quickly and drill into root causes rather than relying solely on month-end financial reporting.

Use data to identify capacity constraints, productivity opportunities, customer issues, leadership gaps, and emerging risks.

Build an organization in which operating leaders use data every day to understand their businesses and take action.

Create accountability around leading indicators that drive customer, operational, and financial outcomes.

Organizational Leadership & Talent Development

Build, coach, and develop a high-performing operating leadership team.

Increase the capability and accountability of Commanders, Service Managers, Field Supervisors, and other field leaders.

Push decision-making closer to the customer and technician by establishing clear expectations, ownership, and accountability.

Develop leaders who can independently diagnose problems, make decisions, and improve their businesses.

Build a strong succession pipeline and operating bench capable of supporting continued growth.

Create an environment of high standards, direct communication, continuous improvement, and development.

Remain highly visible in the field and build credibility with technicians and frontline leaders.

Growth, Integration & Change Leadership

Help scale Helios through continued organic growth and strategic acquisitions.

Lead operational integration of acquired businesses while preserving the strengths, customer relationships, and speed that made those businesses successful.

Create consistency in operating practices, systems, metrics, and expectations without over-centralizing decision-making.

Lead effectively through change and help teams understand not only what is changing, but why.

Identify scalable best practices and deploy them across the organization.

Balance standardization with the flexibility required to serve different customers, markets, and field conditions.

Candidate Profile

We are intentionally prioritizing operating-model experience over traditional industry pedigree.

The strongest candidate will likely bring:

Significant leadership experience in a national or multi-site field-service organization with complex customer requirements.

Experience leading large, technician-heavy, geographically distributed operations.

Direct, active P&L leadership with a demonstrated ability to connect field-level operating drivers to revenue, margin, and cash performance.

Deep experience managing field capacity, including technician productivity, utilization, scheduling, dispatch, routing, skill mix, and workforce planning.

Experience operating against demanding customer SLAs and service requirements across multiple markets.

Exceptional analytical capability and demonstrated experience using operating data to identify root causes and drive action.

Experience improving and scaling complex organizations through change, growth, and integration.

A track record of building strong operating leaders and pushing accountability deeper into an organization.

Experience integrating acquired or decentralized businesses and creating consistency without adding unnecessary bureaucracy.

Commercial HVACR, mechanical services, facilities services, or similar technical field-service experience is strongly preferred but is not required if the candidate brings exceptional national field-service operating experience.

Ideal backgrounds could include HVACR and mechanical services as well as other sophisticated national field-service environments where technician capacity, dispatch, SLAs, customer requirements, and field economics are critical to success.

Leadership Characteristics

The right leader for Helios will be:

Low ego and high accountability. Willing to own results while giving others the opportunity and responsibility to lead.

Hungry, humble, and smart. Driven to improve, willing to learn, and highly effective with people.

Curious before prescriptive. Seeks to understand why the business operates the way it does before deciding what should change.

Data-driven. Naturally follows numbers to their source and uses facts to drive decisions and accountability.

Operationally curious. Wants to understand what is happening at the customer, technician, and work-order level.

A builder of leaders. Measures success through the capability of the organization, not the number of decisions that flow through them.

Field credible. Equally comfortable in a customer or ownership meeting and spending a day in the field with a technician.

Commercially minded. Understands that great operations enable growth, customer retention, and stronger economics.

Comfortable with change. Able to create clarity and momentum in an organization that continues to evolve.

Bias toward action. Moves quickly from data and diagnosis to ownership and execution.

What Success Looks Like in the First 12–18 Months

The EVP will be successful when Helios has:

More productive technician capacity across the platform, with a clear understanding of capacity and constraints by geography and skill set.

Improved field retention and a stronger technician experience.

Technician utilization consistently at or above target, supported by better capacity planning, routing, dispatch, training, and field leadership.

Better and more consistent SLA execution across national accounts and geographies.

Strong topline growth with continued margin discipline, demonstrating the ability to convert customer demand into profitable revenue.

Improved visibility into field economics, with operating leaders understanding the drivers of revenue, margin, productivity, and cash.

A stronger operating bench, with Commanders, Service Managers, Field Supervisors, and other leaders demonstrating greater ownership and capability.

A repeatable operating model that can support continued organic growth and successfully integrate future acquisitions.

More decisions being made at the appropriate level of the organization, with stronger accountability flowing down rather than more decisions flowing up.

The Opportunity

This is an opportunity to help build the next version of Helios.

The foundation has been established and the business has significant demand and opportunity ahead of it. The next phase is about turning that opportunity into scalable execution: increasing productive capacity, delivering consistently for national customers, developing exceptional field leaders, integrating future growth, and continuing to improve the economics of the business.

We are looking for a leader who wants to build that operating platform, not simply manage it.
