What caught me off guard was how lonely some decisions became. Earlier in my career there was always someone more senior to escalate to. As a Partner you're often the person everyone else comes to, even when you're not completely sure yourself.

The biggest surprise was how normal everyone was. Before joining I had this image of strategy consulting being full of geniuses. Most of the top performers were just organised, reliable, and very good with people. A lot of the job was also more PowerPoint and stakeholder management than I expected.

Starting a company taught me more about execution than any other role I've had. When you're a founder there's nobody to hide behind and every problem eventually becomes your problem. It gave me a much greater appreciation for sales, customer feedback, and how difficult it is to turn an idea into a business.
Sept 2012 – Aug 2014 · 1 yr 11 moView salary
This role shaped almost everything that came after. It taught me how to structure problems, communicate clearly, and stay calm when I didn't have all the answers. Looking back, the consulting toolkit was valuable, but the confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems was what had the biggest long term impact.
Worth it for the network and career reset.
Aerospace taught me how to break complex problems into manageable pieces.
